Retinol rarely works alone. What you layer with it, and what you keep away from it, decides whether your routine stays comfortable or turns into weeks of dryness and stinging. This page is a pairing guide: which ingredients I pair with retinol, which ones belong on a different night or a different time of day, and which combinations to skip. For product picks at high strength, see our Best 2.5% Retinol Serum 2026 guide. For choosing a strength, see our 2.5% vs 1% vs 0.5% retinol comparison.

Ingredients That Pair Well With Retinol
Humectants and hyaluronic acid
Dryness is the most common reason people quit retinol. Humectants draw water into the surface layers of skin and make the adjustment weeks easier. Hyaluronic acid is the best documented. In a randomized study by Pavicic and colleagues (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, 2011), 76 women aged 30 to 60 applied creams with 0.1% hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights around one eye and a vehicle cream around the other, twice daily for 60 days. All of the hyaluronic acid creams were measured to improve skin hydration and elasticity compared with the vehicle. On retinol nights, apply a hyaluronic acid serum to dry skin first, wait a minute, then apply retinol.
Barrier moisturizers
A moisturizer with emollients and occlusives such as shea butter, squalane, ceramides or plant oils seals the surface and limits the tight feeling that retinol can cause. You can use it in two ways:
- After retinol, once the retinol has absorbed for 2 to 5 minutes, for the full-strength approach.
- Before retinol (the sandwich method) to buffer it while your skin adjusts. A thin layer of moisturizer, then retinol, then a second thin layer if you are very dry.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide is a stable, water-soluble form of vitamin B3 that works comfortably at the same mildly acidic to neutral pH as most retinol formulas, so there is no formulation conflict in using them together. I did not find a well-controlled published study that isolates retinol plus niacinamide against retinol alone, so I will not claim the pair performs better together. What I can say is that they are compatible, and many formulas combine them. Our Retinol Glow Radiant Renewal Serum is one example, pairing retinol with niacinamide, bakuchiol and Argireline in a single formula.
Peptides
Peptides such as palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 (Matrixyl 3000) and acetyl hexapeptide-8 (Argireline) are amino acid sequences used in cosmetic formulas for the look of firmness and expression lines. They work by a different route than retinol, and they do not carry retinol's dryness, which makes them a natural pairing. Apply a peptide serum to clean skin, let it absorb for a minute, then apply retinol. Or blend a peptide booster into your night moisturizer (see the recipe below).
Bakuchiol
Bakuchiol is a plant-derived ingredient often discussed as a retinol alternative. In a randomized, double-blind study by Dhaliwal and colleagues (British Journal of Dermatology, 2019), 44 participants applied either 0.5% bakuchiol cream twice daily or 0.5% retinol cream once daily for 12 weeks. Both groups were measured to have reduced wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, with no statistically significant difference between them, and the retinol users reported more scaling and stinging. That study compared the two; it did not test them combined. In practice, you can use a formula that contains both, or rotate bakuchiol in on the nights you skip retinol.
Ingredients to Separate From Retinol
L-ascorbic acid vitamin C
L-ascorbic acid serums are formulated at a low pH, typically around 3.5 or below, to stay effective. Layering a low-pH serum and retinol in the same step is a common source of stinging. The simple fix is timing: vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen, retinol at night.
Exfoliating acids (AHAs and BHAs)
Glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid all speed surface exfoliation, and so does retinol. Using both on the same night is the fastest route to over-exfoliation. There is also a sun factor: the FDA reports that in research it sponsored, AHA use for four weeks increased sensitivity to UV-induced reddening by 18%. Put acids and retinol on alternate nights, and never skip sunscreen while using either. If you formulate your own acid products, see our guide on how to make a 10% glycolic moisturizer.
Benzoyl peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidizer. In a laboratory study by Martin and colleagues (British Journal of Dermatology, 1998), benzoyl peroxide was reported to degrade tretinoin, a related retinoid, when the two were combined, and indoor light markedly increased the effect. That study tested tretinoin and adapalene, not cosmetic retinol, but retinol is also sensitive to oxidation and light. Use benzoyl peroxide in the morning and retinol at night, or alternate days.
Physical exfoliation
Grainy scrubs, cleansing brushes and dermaplaning all remove surface cells mechanically. Skip them on retinol nights and on the morning after. Once your skin has adjusted, once a week on a non-retinol night is plenty.
Combinations to Skip
- Two retinoids at once. Do not layer a retinol serum over a retinol cream, or retinol over a prescription retinoid. Choose one.
- Retinol right before waxing or a peel. Many estheticians ask clients to stop retinol several days before waxing or a professional peel. Follow your provider's instructions.
- Retinol on broken or freshly irritated skin. Wait until the area is comfortable again.

DIY Blend: Peptide Night Moisturizer for Retinol Nights
If you prefer fewer steps, blend a peptide booster into your night moisturizer and apply it after retinol. Use one peptide per blend at the full recommended rate. Skin Perfection serum boosters follow a simple drop rate: 9 drops equals 1% per fluid ounce.
| Option | Booster | Rate | Drops per 1 fl oz of moisturizer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firmness focus | Matrixyl 3000 Serum Booster | 8% | 72 drops |
| Expression line focus | Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-8) booster | 10% | 90 drops |
- Start with 1 fl oz of a fragrance-free moisturizer in a clean jar or airless pump.
- Add the drops for one option above.
- Stir thoroughly with a clean spatula for 60 seconds until uniform.
- Label with the date and use within 3 months.
Where Skin Perfection Retinol Fits
If you are ready for a high-strength step, the Skin Perfection 2.5% Retinol Serum is a light gel that layers easily over a hyaluronic serum and under a moisturizer. It is labeled for all skin types except sensitive skin, so build up slowly using the starter week above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use vitamin C and retinol in the same routine?
Yes, at different times of day. Use L-ascorbic acid vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen and retinol at night. That keeps the low-pH serum and the retinol out of the same step.
Should hyaluronic acid go before or after retinol?
Before, on dry skin. Let it absorb for a minute, then apply retinol, then moisturizer. If your skin is adjusting, use moisturizer before retinol as well.
Can I use glycolic acid and retinol on the same night?
Not while your skin is adjusting. Alternate nights. Even experienced users usually find alternating more comfortable than stacking.
Do peptides make retinol less effective?
There is no known formulation conflict between cosmetic peptides and retinol, and they are commonly combined in the same products. Apply the peptide serum first, then retinol, or blend the peptide into the moisturizer you use after retinol.
Is bakuchiol a replacement for retinol or a partner?
Either. In the Dhaliwal 2019 study, 0.5% bakuchiol and 0.5% retinol were measured to produce similar changes in wrinkle surface area and pigmentation over 12 weeks, with less scaling and stinging on bakuchiol. Use it on non-retinol nights, or choose a formula that includes both.
