Matrixyl 3000, Matrixyl Synthe-6 and Argireline are the three peptides people most often ask us to compare. They show up together on labels, they are sold side by side, and they are all described as "for wrinkles." They do not do the same job. This page compares them head to head and gives you a simple table: which peptide for which line. If you are looking for the full overview of 20% Matrixyl collagen serums, what the concentration means and how to use one, see our Top 20% Matrixyl Collagen Serum: Complete Guide.
The Short Answer
- Matrixyl 3000 is a signal peptide pair used for the look of firmness, overall wrinkle depth and roughness across the whole face.
- Matrixyl Synthe-6 is a signal peptide used for the look of specific set-in lines on the forehead and at the outer corners of the eyes.
- Argireline is a neurotransmitter-type peptide used for the look of expression lines: the lines that come from movement.
The two Matrixyl peptides work on how supported the skin looks. Argireline works on lines that deepen because your face makes the same shapes all day. That is why formulators pair them rather than choose one.

Matrixyl 3000: The Whole-Face Firming Pair
Matrixyl 3000 combines two amino acid sequences. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 (formerly listed as Palmitoyl Oligopeptide) is the sequence glycine, histidine, lysine. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 is glycine, glutamine, proline, arginine. Both are attached to palmitic acid, a fatty acid that helps them associate with the skin's lipid environment.
What the studies measured
In Sederma's in vivo study, 23 women aged 42 to 67 applied a cream containing 3% Matrixyl 3000 twice daily to one half of the face for two months and a placebo cream to the other half. Compared with the start of the study, the Matrixyl 3000 side showed:
- Surface covered by deep wrinkles: 39.4% lower (placebo side: 4.3% higher)
- Density of main wrinkles: 32.9% lower
- Mean depth of main wrinkles: 19.9% lower
- Volume of main wrinkles: 23.3% lower
- Roughness: 16.0% lower
- Skin tone: 15.5% higher
A peer-reviewed review of topical peptides (Schagen, 2017) also summarizes a 28-volunteer half-face study of Matrixyl 3000 reporting reduced wrinkle depth, volume and density.
When to choose it
Choose Matrixyl 3000 when the lines you see are part of a bigger picture: skin that looks thinner, less bouncy and more textured, with fine lines across the cheeks and under the eyes rather than one deep crease. It is the broadest of the three.
Skin Perfection's Matrixyl 3000 Serum Booster is the undiluted complex, used at up to 8%.
Matrixyl Synthe-6: The Targeted Line Filler
Matrixyl Synthe-6 is Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38. Sederma launched it in 2011 as a peptide aimed at specific wrinkles, especially forehead lines and crow's feet, and described it as supporting six constituents of the skin matrix and the junction between the outer and inner skin layers. The supplier reported that after two months of application, forehead and crow's feet wrinkles looked visibly smoother, with improvements across wrinkle volume, depth and surface.
The supplier summary we could verify does not publish volunteer numbers or exact percentages, so we report only the outcome described.
When to choose it
Choose Matrixyl Synthe-6 when you can point to the line: horizontal forehead lines that are visible even when your face is relaxed, or crow's feet that stay after you stop smiling. Its recommended rate is 2%, so a little goes a long way: 18 drops per ounce, which means a 0.5 oz bottle makes sixteen 1 oz batches.
Our Matrixyl Synthe-6 Serum Booster is used at 2%.
Argireline: The Expression Line Peptide
Argireline is Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, a six amino acid sequence first described by Blanes-Mira and colleagues in 2002. The research centers on the SNARE complex, the protein assembly involved in the signaling that makes facial muscles contract. That is why Argireline is grouped with the expression-line peptides, and why it is so often compared with Botox. It is not Botox and it is not injected: it is a topical cosmetic ingredient studied for the look of lines from movement.
What the studies measured
- Blanes-Mira 2002: a 10% Argireline preparation applied around the eyes of 10 women for 30 days, with about a 30% improvement reported in the look of eye-area wrinkles.
- Wang 2013: a randomized, placebo-controlled study of 60 adults applying Argireline around the eyes twice daily for 4 weeks. Total anti-wrinkle efficacy was 48.9% in the Argireline group and 0% in the placebo group.
- Supplier data (Lubrizol): a 20.6% reduction in the look of wrinkles after 1 week with a 2% Argireline solution.
When to choose it
Choose Argireline for the 11s between the brows, forehead creases that appear when you raise your eyebrows, crow's feet when you smile, and lines around the mouth. Which Peptide for Which Line
| Line or concern | Main cause | First choice | Pair with |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11s between the brows | Frowning, concentrating | Argireline 10% | Matrixyl Synthe-6 2% if the line stays when relaxed |
| Horizontal forehead lines, only when moving | Raising the eyebrows | Argireline 10% | Matrixyl 3000 8% |
| Horizontal forehead lines, visible at rest | Movement plus loss of support | Matrixyl Synthe-6 2% | Argireline 10% |
| Crow's feet when smiling | Smiling, squinting | Argireline 10% | Matrixyl Synthe-6 2% |
| Crow's feet at rest | Movement plus thinning skin | Matrixyl Synthe-6 2% | Argireline 10% |
| Fine crepey lines on cheeks and under eyes | Thinner-looking, less supported skin | Matrixyl 3000 8% | Hyaluronic acid base for hydration |
| Lines around the mouth | Talking, pursing | Argireline 10% | Matrixyl 3000 8% |
| Overall roughness and loss of firmness | Age and sun exposure | Matrixyl 3000 8% | Matrixyl Synthe-6 2% |
A quick test: look in the mirror with a relaxed face. If the line disappears completely, it is an expression line, and Argireline is your starting point. If it is still there, add one of the Matrixyl peptides.
Using All Three Together
Because the three peptides are studied for different routes, they can share one bottle. Each goes in at its highest recommended rate:
| Ingredient | Percentage | Drops in 1 oz base | Grams |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matrixyl 3000 | 8% | 72 | 2.4 g |
| Matrixyl Synthe-6 | 2% | 18 | 0.6 g |
| Argireline | 10% | 90 | 3.0 g |
| Total | 20% | 180 | 6.0 g |
Add all three to 1 oz of a preserved, water-based serum such as a hyaluronic acid serum, cap and shake. None of the three is oil-soluble, so do not use a face oil as the base. Each peptide has its own published or supplier testing. We have not found a published trial that tested these three together, so this pairing is formulation logic, not a tested combination claim.
Apply the finished blend twice daily, morning and night, followed by moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen. Twice daily is how these ingredients were tested and gives the fastest results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Matrixyl 3000 or Argireline better for wrinkles?
It depends on the wrinkle. Matrixyl 3000 was tested for overall wrinkle depth, density and roughness. Argireline was tested on lines around the eyes linked to movement. For lines that are visible even at rest, start with a Matrixyl peptide. For lines that only appear when you move, start with Argireline. Many routines use both.
Is Matrixyl Synthe-6 stronger than Matrixyl 3000?
They are not stronger or weaker versions of each other. They are different peptides with different jobs. Matrixyl 3000 covers the whole face. Matrixyl Synthe-6 is aimed at specific forehead lines and crow's feet, and its recommended rate is lower at 2%.
Can I use Argireline with Matrixyl in the same serum?
Yes. Both are water-soluble and are commonly combined. Keep each at or below its own maximum: 10% for Argireline, 8% for Matrixyl 3000 and 2% for Matrixyl Synthe-6.
Which of the three is most like Botox?
Argireline is the one compared with Botox, because its research centers on the signaling behind muscle contraction. It is a topical cosmetic ingredient, not an injectable, and it does not freeze expression. It is studied for softening the look of expression lines over weeks of use.
How long until I see a difference?
The test periods were 1 week (Argireline supplier data), 4 weeks (Argireline, Wang 2013), 30 days (Argireline, Blanes-Mira 2002) and 2 months (Matrixyl 3000 and Matrixyl Synthe-6). Judge your results with photos at 4 and 8 weeks.
